Práctica y semántica en la evangelización de los Guaraníes del Paraguay (s. XVI-XVII)
(Practice and Semantics in the Evangelization of the Guarani of Paraguay [ 16th c - 17th c])

Título: Foreword

Títul o:A “Spiritual Conquest” of the Guarani people had to be lasting and profound conquest made by means of a language and made on a language. Any colonial project, sooner or later, comes to intervene on a language. But how such particular and specific intervention is made? Languages and their words have got history and nations are the product of history of their languages and their words, of the destructions and replacements that are happening in them, of the transformations and creations that have been worked and negotiated in them and for the sake of them.
Título: So what was the linguistic practice of the missionaries in their work of evangelization? And how did the Indians participate in that process not only of conversion but of an authentic creation? The author analyzed the Guarani texts that emerged from the late XVIIth century, which flourished during the XVIIth century and in the XVIIIth century were already classics. The "Catecismo" by Luis Bolaños and the "Catecismo" by Ruiz de Montoya are the sources that provide the main materials to be searched in.
Título: Apparently the missionaries just wanted to translate themselves and to translate the message they brought in their passionate hearts and by means of the ardent lips. But the translation, the art of translation is not only an act of will, neither a theoretical intention, but a tenacious and continued practice. During this process they used to place the usual equivalences between languages, but they often had to overcome the perplexity and create new meanings to words already known. Tupã as the Christian God is one of the most daring neologisms. Sometimes they had to surrender to what was absolutely new and to accept the introduction of Hispanic barbarisms. The "Catecismo" by Bolaños contained more than twenty of these hispanicisms.
Título: The great virtue of many missionaries is that they were not only theologians and catechists, but good linguists, what is confirmed by the numerous and good works of grammar and lexicography. Father Antonio Ruiz de Montoya, for example, before he has written "Catecismo" (1640), he had already published different books like "Arte de la lengua guaraní", "Vocabulario" and "Tesoro", which does not diminish the quality and magnitude of the "Tesoro" of the Spanish language by Santiago of Cavarrubias (1611). The involvement of indigenous people in the translation process has always been a constant and guarantee for rightness and authenticity in the use of words.
Título: In the field of historical linguistics, where there are so few studies, this research offers perspectives not only to recover the memory of the Guarani language, in the difficult steps that it had to do and to overcome these obstacles, but it also means a crucial contribution to analyze theoretically and practically the creative transformation of a language in contact with another life form that does not destroy or replace the previous one, but it leads the previous one to new ways of speaking that finally will become a new language. It is an aspect of modernity in which we are immersed today and that we cannot neglect.
